Nunavut community asks federal court to stop offshore energy exploration

APTN National News
The small community of Clyde River, Nunavut found itself in Toronto courtroom Monday.

The community of about 1,000 people along the coast of Baffin Island are asking the federal court to overturn a regulatory decision to allow offshore energy exploration.

The National Energy Board approved a five-year project of seismic testing for a Norwegian consortium last June in the Davis Strait.

But the people of Clyde River say the testing, which maps the sea floor with loud sounds, could impact their way of life as they depend on the mammals and fish for survival.

And as APTN’s Delaney Windigo reports the community isn’t alone in its objection.
