Ottawa – The man who allegedly admitted to killing a Cree woman from Ottawa in 2010 is now on suicide watch, APTN National News has learned.

Adrian Daou, 22, is being held in segregation at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre and being watched around the clock.

APTN has been told Daou became incoherent and distraught after coming forward to Ottawa police late last month in the death of Jennifer Stewart, 36.

His lawyer told media after his first court appearance Feb. 27 that his client was “calm and collected” according to reports.

Daou, from Kingston, was already in custody at OCDC on a drug conviction. He was in regular cells prior to being charged with first-degree murder.

It’s not clear if he already tried to kill himself.

Stewart was found behind a small apartment building on Alice Street in the Vanier suburb of Ottawa. She was spotted in the early morning hours of Aug. 20 by a woman walking her dog. She was left in a gravel parking lot which has since been paved over.

She was stabbed to death.

Stewart fought addictions she tried to keep from her some members of her family. A mother, Stewart was Cree from northern Quebec.

The First Nation side of her family has asked for privacy but said Stewart should be remembered as a loving mother.
