Winter weather and treacherous road conditions are forcing highway closures across Saskatchewan Wednesday.

But it wasn’t enough to stop hundreds of First Nation leaders from attending the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations’ fall assembly in Saskatoon.

The FSIN said it expected 1,500 people to attend this year’s gathering. Many turned out in the morning for the grand entry of chiefs and dignitaries.

The chiefs voted for a new grand chief and first vice-chief Thursday.

Interim chief Bobby Cameron said he hopes there will be unity following the election.
