When it comes to First Nation people of Canada, we seem to get the short end of the stick. Even in my community, there are serious splits amongst our families because people try to stand up for their rights.u00a0 The right to live in a healthy environment without having to fight tooth n nail for everything.u00a0 Evenu00a0the health issues for our people are not being dealt with.u00a0We just had another funeral where a young man died of alcoholism.u00a0 He was seen in our city streets, drank a couple or more bottles of cheap wine known asu00a074 every day. He lived in the most filthy place you’ve ever seen.u00a0 He was also homeless even though he had family.u00a0u00a0People are sicku00a0with different types of illnesses,u00a0many of our elders are dealing withu00a0issues of chronic deseases.u00a0The health system is not helping us as Aborginal peoples.u00a0 I remember when my mom was alive, she would go see her doctor who provided her with medication for her ailments.u00a0 We found bottles upon bottles of unused precription drugs in her dresser drawer.u00a0 She would pick n choose and it depended on what type of ailment she had that day and would take a pill for it.u00a0 She did not read or write English.u00a0 She understood very little when spoken to in English.u00a0 So it ERKS me how the physician can precribe medications to Aboriginal eldersu00a0when he/she can barely understand them.
