The man accused of the brutal attack on a woman in Prince Albert, Sask. last month made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Leslie Ivan Roderick Black, 29, was arrested and charged Saturday with attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault for the alleged attack on the 47-year-old victim on June 1. She was left for dead in the parking lot and is now recovering in an Edmonton hospital.

Police said Black allegedly left her burned and mutilated in a parking lot. She’s since had both of her legs amputated.

Black is scheduled to be back in court July 16.

A publication ban has been placed on the name of the victim.

Prince Albert police said forensic and “other evidence” led investigators to Black, who is the only suspect. Police said in statement released Monday that the victim knew Black who was “considered a casual acquaintance.”

Police said the attack occurred after the victim was allegedly left alone with Black in the “early morning hours”.

Edmonton police interviewed the victim on June 21 and she cooperated with her questioners, the statement said.

The RCMP, Saskatoon Police and other “national police services” also aided in the investigation, said Prince Albert police.

Doctors were forced to amputate both of the victim’s legs as a result of severe burns, said police. She will also need extensive facial reconstruction surgery to her face, police said.
