Investigators in Whitehorse are appealing for people to come forward with any information about the murder of Aaron Smarch.

Smarch, 35, from Carcross, was found lying unconscious on the ground in downtown Whitehorse on Feb. 2. He was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Norman Kendi, 18, has been charged with first degree murder. His first court appearance was Feb. 7 and he remains in custody.

RCMP say Kendi was arrested on Feb. 6 without incident.

They also executed two search warrants related to investigation in downtown Whitehorse that same day.

The homicide is the first to take place in Yukon in 2023.

A makeshift memorial has since been erected in Smarch’s honor on Fourth Avenue.

Yukon RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Whitehorse RCMP Major Crime Unit at 867-667-5551.
