Police charge man with murder of First Nation woman in Ottawa

A 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Jennifer Stewart, a First Nations mother from Ottawa who was killed in August 2010.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Jennifer Stewart, a First Nations mother from Ottawa who was killed in August 2010.

Ottawa police charged Adrian Daou with first-degree murder Tuesday after he came to them with information.

Police told the family of Stewart, 36, Tuesday evening. They also said Daou allegedly confessed to killing Stewart.

Daou, from Kingston, was already in custody at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre.

Stewart was found behind a small apartment building on Alice Street in the Vanier suburb of Ottawa. She was spotted in the early morning hours of Aug. 20 by a woman walking her dog. She was left in a gravel parking lot which has since been paved over.

She was stabbed to death.

Stewart fought addictions she tried to keep from her some members of her family.

A mother, Stewart was Cree from northern Quebec.

The First Nation side of her family asked for privacy but said Stewart should be remembered as a loving mother.

    It doesnt matter what drugs she used or how she lived, she had a right to life that was stolen from her. My sympathies to her family and prayers for justice.
