Manitoba First Nations file for judicial review of new RCMP contract

APTN National News
All three of Manitoba’s major First Nations organizations have jointly filed an application for a judicial review of the new RCMP contract in the province.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, and Southern Chiefs Organization say they were not consulted on the contract, despite issuing multiple invitations, and they are concerned about the RCMP’s ability to adequately police First Nations communities.

Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Grand Chief David Harper is calling for the province’s First Nations to “start governing our own, policing our own” because the current policing arrangement “is not doing a good job”.

APTN National News reporter Matt Thordarson has the story.
