Whiteduck was elected chief in 2008 and became one of the leading voices on pushing for improvements to on-reserve education.

It’s unclear why Whiteduck resigned, but his decision left many in the band office “shocked.”

Whiteduck could not be reached for comment.

Kitigan Zibi sits in Quebec about 135 kilometres north of Ottawa.
