Indigenous youth are making a difference across the country and here’s how

From coast to coast to coast, Indigenous youth are doing amazing things and breaking barriers every day.

For instance, Kahnay Johnson is a high school student who swims and last year became the first transgender male to compete in an event in Manitoba.

One day in 2019, 10-year old Isabella Kulak from Kamsack, Sask., went to school wearing a ribbon skirt. She was hurt by comments made by an educational assistant about it. Did she back away? No. She became part of a movement that would eventually lead to Jan. 4 being declared National Ribbon Skirt Day.

There’s also Megan Metz – a member of the Haisla Nation in British Columbia. She’s dedicated to ensuring her language survives. Megan also advocates for mental health and wellness.

And Sav Jonsa knows a few things about breaking down barriers. Sav is a non-binary Two Spirit intern working with APTN News. They are working as a reporter and has some experience hosting the national newscast.

On this episode of InFocus, we’re looking, and talking to, Indigenous youth who are making a difference in their community and breaking barriers for the next generation.
