Hearing for man accused of killing Megan Gallagher begins in Saskatoon

The preliminary hearing for a man charged with the first-degree murder of Megan Gallagher is underway in Saskatoon.

Robert “Bobby” James Thomas is one of nine people charged in relation to the death of the 30-year-old Métis woman from Saskatoon. It’s scheduled all week but details in a preliminary hearing can’t be reported on. Today also happens to be the three year anniversary of Gallagher’s disappearance.

In a statement on Facebook, the Gallaghers said they draw strength from all the support they receive online and in person.

“We do appreciate all support from friends and community, that’s what gets us through,” said the statement on her father, Brian Gallagher’s page.

Thomas, 27, was arrested in Prince George, B.C. on Sept. 22, 2022, prior to Gallagher’s remains being located. Saskatoon Major Crimes recovered her remains from the South Saskatchewan River more than an hour northeast of Saskatoon on Sept. 29.

Nine people were charged with a range of offences in her death from unlawful confinement and aggravated assault to indignity to human remains and first-degree murder.

Three of the accused have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced.

On Sept. 17, Megan’s Memorial Walk saw more than 200 people come out to support the family. With each preliminary hearing scheduled to last a week, the Gallagher family expects to spend the next six weeks attending court.
