Five fires under investigation in Iqaluit including blaze at Northmart

Nunavut’s fire marshall and the RCMP are investigating a series of fires that kept firefighters busy in Iqaluit over night.

The fire department responded to five fires – three car and two structural blazes.

The most serious was the fire at the town’s grocery store.

In the early morning hours, thick black smoke drifted across Iqaluit as firefighters struggled to get control of the fire at the Northmart.

By late afternoone, smoke was still coming off what was left of the Northmart’s warehouse.

The fire also forced the retailer to close the grocery store.
