The family of a 14 year-old boy who died in Labrador last week is speaking out.

Burton Winters went missing on Sunday.

His body was located kilometers from where his snowmobile was discovered.

The family released a statement on the weekend criticizing the department of National Defence for talking too long to help with the search.

“Burton’s determination to get home outshined any efforts put forward by the Department of National Defence,” the statement said. “We cannot stand for this lack of service to continue in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is the time for someone to step up and take responsibility (for the) poor decision making (and) ensure that this doesn’t happen to another innocent family.”

The Department of National Defence is investigating the incident.
