Akwesasne Mohawk Police work to identify 6 bodies found along St. Lawrence River

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service says the investigation will continue today after six bodies were discovered Thursday along the shores of the St. Lawrence River in Tsi Snaihne (Snye) one of three districts in the territory.

“The first body was located around 5:00 P.M. in a marsh area,” said a statement from the police and posted on social media. “The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Marine unit continued to search the area with assistance from the Coast Guard and the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.”

According to police, authorities will ask Quebec’s provincial police, the Sûreté du Québec and the Ontario Provincial Police for air support units to assist with the investigation.

“Police will be waiting on the results of a post-mortem and toxicology tests to determine the cause of death,” the online statement said. “Police are attempting to identify the deceased persons at this time and ascertain their status in Canada. There is no threat to the public at this time.”

Akwesasne Mohawk Territory straddles Ontario, Quebec and New York State along the St. Lawrence River.
