‘It was uncalled for’: Family of man shot by Winnipeg police speak out

Chad Williams was shot by Winnipeg police on January 11 and died early the next morning.

The family of the 26 year old say they’re hesitant to trust the police after this.

Police say they encountered a man acting suspicious shortly before 8 pm.

APTN spoke to the family of the man fatally shot to hear how they feel about what happened.

  1. The Winnipeg police force would benefit from First Nations history classes taught by First Nations’ educators . These killings originate from ignorance. Canadians do not know that racist policies and politicians are still prevalent today. The Federal government in particular is guilty.

A people with 30,000 years of documented presence in this land has been cheated, lied to, abused and manipulated for 152 years. Until First Nations have equal rights, equal opportunities, and sovereignty on Reservations, until truth is taught in schools, hatred, fear and resentment will prevail. And F.N. young men will be stupidly killed, young women raped then murdered. The police will yawn. Oh Canada we are pathetic.

Winnipeg is well known for its racism, derived from a lack of knowledge. A people who have endured 7 generations of abuse, lies, loss of language, and culture are our shame. Canadian governments are responsible for breaking these people. It is beyond time that we as citizens educated ourselves and made amends.
First Nations have withstood the tyranny of racism far too long.
