Young Indigenous mothers perish in Winnipeg apartment fire over the weekend

Overcrowding and poverty is partly to blame for a fatal fire in Winnipeg’s North end over the weekend that claimed the lives a man and two young Indigenous mothers.

Jolene Ducharme, 20, and Stephanie Meekis, 21, both left behind two young children.

It’s believed they were sleeping when the fire broke out in a two suite duplex at the time where 14 people were inside.

Fire officials say overcrowding and poverty play a role in tragedies like this.
