It was around 3 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 25 that a mother of four on a rare night out became separated from her friend after leaving a local pub in Nanaimo, B.C.

The woman, who does not want to be identified, said she stepped onto the street to hail a cab – and that’s when things went wrong.

“I hailed a cab here and he picked me up he asked me where I was going,” she told APTN News. “I gave him my address of where I was going to and he proceeded to drive down the road.”

She said she doesn’t know the name of the company – but remembers the car was blue. There also wasn’t any cab number on the window nor drivers identification. Only the cab meter.

She said she gave the address of where she wanted to go – and then eventually noticed that the driver was going the wrong way.

“He took me towards Bowen Road and there is a park and he pulled into the park and he was silent the whole time,” she said. “And I asked him where he was going he wouldn’t answer I panicked I said where are you going? You are going the wrong way! He didn’t answer.”

“He pulled in behind the area and parked the car.”

She said at the very end there was a car and a truck and there was a group of five or six men standing around – one was smoking a cigarette.

She said the driver got out and opened the back door.

“And then he attacked me in the backseat of the taxicab,” she said. “He pulled my legs and tried to he tried to assault me and when he was going to undo himself I took the opportunity to and I kicked him as hard as I possibly could and I picked up my phone and I said I’m phoning the police.

She said although her cell phone was dead, she pretended to call the police.

“He jumped up jumped outta the cab slammed the door,” she said. “But then a new driver came in so there was two drivers for this cab one was older and one was younger and I sat up and I said are you going to try and do what the man did and he didn’t say anything he just sat there and he was scared and I couldn’t tell if he was scared of me or if he was scared of the man he was speaking to and he just asked where are you going and he pulled off and dropped me off.”

The next day she said she called the police and reported the incident.

Const. Gary O’Brien is with the Nanaimo RCMP.

“We received a report on November 25,” he said. “It’s an active investigation… because it’s very active and in the preliminary stages there is nothing further that we can report on this.”

“If anything changes as far as information received on the file we feel it necessary to report to the public we will.

  1. Used to Dispatch no raises there says:

Yellow cabs, NO blue cars on fleet, Used to when called SwiftsureTaxi.
On breaks they hang at LD’s, Wenly’s parking lot this young mom flagged
cab @ 4 am, cars disappear when Casino closes. No culture/race of driver
offered. Normally perps fear 911 & GPS perhaps it slipped out her phone
wasn’t working? In the meantime there’s a (moonlighting) tag team out there using a BLUE CAB
TO RAPE YOUNG GIRLS who are vulnerable after partying. Hope more evidence is found fast.
ALL TOURISTS BEWARE THIS TOWN IS DIRTY IF YOU COME DON’T JUMP INTO A BLUE CAB

  2. Simply a question… not implying anything but why did the victim wait till the next day to report this to the police and why did she stay in the cab and continue to her destination after all this took place. Something is not adding up.

  5. I’ve had a cab in Nanaimo try to take me in the wrong direction from my destination before and he tried to play it off as if he knew better before I threatened to call 911. Definitely scared me and I stopped taking cabs in Nanaimo altogether shortly after that incident.

  6. We only have 2 taxi companies here in Nanaimo and both have yellow taxi’s…there are no blue taxi’s, so I am not sure where a blue taxi would be from, its not local.

  7. This is why I don’t catch cabs !! I take the driving service because they are a great respectable group of people. I lived on the mainland for 8 years and heard too many stories to be comfortable with catching cabs.

  13. I have seen a cab driver assault a woman in his cab in another BC town, he denied it. I had a cab driver try and pull stuff off with me in my own hometown a few years ago

  14. attempted rape should be treated the same as a rape. these men need to be charged! The cab company should be held liable too.
