About 300 kilometres west of Mexico city, a town of about 16,000 Indigenous Purepecha people rose up last year against a notorious drug cartel, loggers and the government.

With their forests being stripped by illegal loggers and protected by the notorious La Familia cartel, the people of Cheran took matters into their own hands.

Bernardo Loyola, editor and director of content for Vice Mexico, was involved in producing a documentary on the situation.

He spoke to APTN National News from Mexico City.
