AKWESASNE–At least two men from the Akwesasne Men’s Council have been arrested and up to 10 more are wanted by U.S. authorities following a raid at an unlicensed casino on the U.S. side of the Mohawk territory Tuesday morning.

The two men have been charged with criminal possession of unlawful gaming devices and criminal possession and unlawful transportation of gaming devices in Indian territory. The two-count federal indictment is expected to be unsealed sometime Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses say Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents along with St. Regis Tribal police officers were involved in the raid.

The Three Feathers Casino opened in the summer of 2011 but was recently shut down for renovations. The casino offered gaming at video terminals.

The Men’s Council of the Way of the Longhouse, which was behind the casino, has said they do not recognize foreign jurisdiction over Akwesasne territory and they hoped to direct profits from the casino into the community.

The two arrested men will be arraigned Monday afternoon in Plattsburgh, NY.

  1. Darryl Paquette says:

should of seen that a coming ask the the guy next door for help
they can not find a hole so find one some were else
it might spill over into their borders

  2. “direct profits from the caino into the community,” as per Men’s Council: are acting in good faith to improve the livilhood in their territory;;; to bad as usual — this type business generated income while it is always accepted in non-Native communities and in my 61 years Akwesasne has faced many witch-hunt tactics by gov’ts to steam roll Native economic initatives. This is just another one!

  3. Another ploy of the government to keep these people from joining the national protest against the continued abuse of Natives on this continent..

  4. The government cannot stand to be on an equal footing with another race which all through history you see all the downright decietful, criminal acts they have commited. This is just another example, no matter how much is poverty in Indian communities because of direct involvement of government policies and action which is the sole contributer to the poverty. They pull shit like this. Stand your ground brothers and sisters on turtle Island, WE are watching what transpires in all of Indian Country – the time has come, IDLE NO MORE !!!
