Two women have been arrested after allegedly posting racist remarks toward Indigenous people on Facebook over the weekend.

RCMP say a 32-year-old woman from Flin Flon, approximately 760 km northwest of Winnipeg, and a 25-year-old woman from Denare Beack, Sask., have been arrested for uttering threats and public incitement of hatred.

Charges are pending against a third person, RCMP said in a release on Tuesday.

RCMP aren’t releasing the names of the females arrested at this time.

On July 29, Flin Flon police received reports of vandalism and property damage throughout the town.

Following that, several individuals took to a local Flin Flon Facebook page to vent about the mischief to property.

That venting quickly escalated into hateful and threatening language against residents of First Nations communities,” RCMP said in the release.

Screenshots of a Facebook thread were posted and shared with many condemning the women for their hateful remarks.

A woman by the name of Destine Spiller posted photos of her spray-painted car on Facebook. In the post she wrote its time to, “have a shoot a Indian day,” and threatened to, “kill some Indians when I get home.”

A second woman by the name of Raycine Chaisson commented on the post saying, “I think it’s time to have a 24 hour purge.”

In a statement released shortly after the arrests, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) Chief Bobby Cameron said “blatant acts and statement of racism,” can no longer be tolerated.

“This life-threatening attitude must be stopped and those guilty of it must be charged for a hate crime and it must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

In a post on Facebook, Spiller’s place of employment wrote, “our business has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to any form of discrimination or racism. The person in question is no longer employed by us.”

“The former employee who made those comments did so on her personal Facebook Account, and they in no way reflect the attitude or values of our business.”

Both women have since deleted their Facebook accounts.

  1. I was wondering when these types of people would be charged for hate crimes and violence. I hope they get what’s warranted by law.
