Armed with walking sticks and fighting blistered feet, a group of walkers is slowly making tracks to Ottawa.

It’s a journey that started months ago when David Kawapit, 18, heard about Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence’s fast and the Idle No More movement.

“I started thinking about how I can help out instead of waiting for someone else to start something, so I decided to go with something from grassroots,” he said. “I decided to go on a journey.”

So Kawapit and six others began to walk starting from the frozen shores of Hudson Bay and 1,500 kilometres to Ottawa.

It hasn’t been easy, but the group is determined to spread the message and bring their concerns to Parliament Hill.

The group didn’t stay small for long. Now, after over 50 days of walking, more than 150 young people from Cree communities along the way have joined them.

They’re now in Algonquin territory and are expected to reach Ottawa in the coming weeks.
