The NDP’s Romeo Saganash easily took his northern Quebec riding despite facing accusations early on his Cree background would prove a liability with local voters.

Saganash received double the number of votes compared to his nearest rival.

The results probably surprised Bloc Quebecois candidate Yvon Levesque who claimed the region would never elect and Aboriginal person.
