A retired senior police officer is speaking out about the shooting death of an Indigenous man.

An inquest into the death of Craig McDougall was supposed to start on Monday – eight years after he was shot by Winnipeg police.

But the hearings are on hold after a witness changed their testimony.

Today, a retired police officer who was hired by the family to look into the shooting sat down with APTN.

Another example of the biased attitude that the RCMP had and continue to have towards resolving deaths of First Peoples. The retired officer is correct when he stated that had it been a high profile person’s relative the case would have resolved within months not years. The negative attitudes so deeply ingrained within the western RCMP groups, will take several generations to eradicate. This is a reflection of Canadian society thus altering the negative attitudes will be difficult to achieve.
