Remains of Inuk woman discovered in Ottawa landfill

“On behalf of my entire family, I give you thanks from the bottom of our hearts.”

Susan Kuplu’s body was recovered at Trail Road Landfill in Ottawa.

Ottawa police say they have discovered the remains of a murdered Inuk woman after searching for her body in the city’s landfill.

Police tweeted about the discovery Sunday morning.

The find brings some closure to the family of Susan Kuplu-Irqittuq, who was reported missing on Jan. 11 and later confirmed as the victim of a homicide.

Her brother, George Kuplu, tweeted a thank-you to police for their “hard work” and passed on appreciation from his family.

“To all of the people who were involved in search of my sister, your prayers did not go unheard,” he wrote.

“On behalf of my entire family, I give you thanks from the bottom of our hearts. Your strength and courage will not go unnoticed.”

Kuplu-Irqittuq’s daughter, Lennese Kublu, is charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a body.

Kublu, 18, and her mother spelled their surnames differently in English.

Kublu’s boyfriend, 28-year-old Dwight Brown, is also charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a human body.

Both suspects remain in custody in Ottawa.

Kublu-Irqittuq, 37, was originally from Igloolik, NU., and had been living in Ottawa for several years. She had other children.
