After years of political turmoil and a criminal trial the chief and several members of Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan have received their punishment for stealing money.

But they won’t be going to jail.

Recently re-elected Chief Duane Antoine was sentenced to 20 months probation, community service and ordered to pay $2,500.

Coun. Colin Favel was ordered to repay more than $12,000.

Both Favel and Antoine admitted to stealing treaty money from the band.

They weren’t alone.

  1. Manuel-Michel Jarrin-Côté says:

Yeah but no.. this doesn’t sit well with me. Chief Antoine should be summarily deposed and new elections ordered. Furthermore all convicted persons should be barred from political office for at least 5 years. Good grief with INM movements all across this nation, it is heartening to see local band communities cleaning up their own Chief and Council.

  2. Can anyone provide the name of the case, R. v. Poundmaker First nation or??? Thanks, reason being more details will be found there, most reports online are limited in information. Wela’lin.
