Ottawa police have been called to Iqaluit to investigate an RCMP shootout with at least one suspect.

An Iqaluit man who exchanged gunfire with police Wednesday is now in hospital, the RCMP has said.

Iqaluit RCMP said there was an “exchange of fire” with an armed man early Wednesday morning.

The man, who was carrying a rifle and aimed it at officers, fled after his face-off with police.

He was later found by police bleeding from the chest.

The man was taken to Qikitaani General Hospital where he is in stable but critical condition.

The RCMP initially responded to a report of gunshots when they encountered the man.

A second man is also in hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries related to the incident, RCMP said.
