Ojibwe girl who refused chemotherapy dies from stroke, reports

APTN National News
NEW CREDIT – Makayla Sault, the 11-year old girl who made national news after refusing chemothereapy has died.

According to a statement posted on the Two Row Times website, Sault died of a stroke.

After a valiant fight, almost a year from diagnosis, our daughter, Makayla Sault suffered a stroke on Sunday morning that she just couldn’t recover from.

Surrounded by the love and support of her family, her community and her nation – on Monday, January 19 at 1:50 PM, in her 12th year, Makayla completed her course. She is now safely in the arms of Jesus.

Makayla was on her way to wellness, bravely fighting toward holistic well-being after the harsh side effects that 12 weeks of chemotherapy inflicted on her body.

Chemotherapy did irreversible damage to her heart and major organs. This was the cause of the stroke.

We continue to support Makayla’s choice to leave chemotherapy. At this time we request privacy from the media while we mourn this tragic loss.”

After 11 weeks of chemotherapy at McMaster hospital in Hamilton, Sault asked her parents to stop.

McMaster asked children’s aid to intervene in the case to force the girl to return to treatment. Brandford Children’s Aid refused.

  1. Charlie Oliver says:

Makayla is passed on that is sad news,
She chose to die in the loving arms of her family instead of being hooked up to machines in a hospital full of strangers no sadness do i feel for her choices. sleep well little one

  2. Our job is to fight anything that would take the lives of our children, including: bad govt policy, crappy living conditions, killers and disease. That’s our job as adults folks.

  3. I totallly support the family on their choice. If I had to choose, it
would be holistic health and NOTHING else. No radiation or chemo
therapy. This statement below comes from a close family member….

“…The chemo made her heart and other organs weak and she had a stroke
that she couldn’t pull through because of the outrageous amount of
chemotherapy put into her system. It WAS the chemo and NOT her choice
that had anything to do with her death….”

    1. I read your statements and your supposed quote and it truly makes me sad that there is such a giant gap to bridge between traditional thinking and modern science. Poor Mikayla had a very good chance of survival and was scammed by these unqualified practitioners in Florida that also made claims they couldn’t make good on.

So how come chemo is the bad guy still? Because her family and aboriginals across Canada are turning this into a independence issue when it was really just about doing right by a little girl that didn’t know why god was ruining her body. Cancer is awful but denying the modern miracles that chemo can work will only ensure more tragic deaths among the aboriginal community.

There are many lawsuits pending against the practitioners of the Hippocratic Health Institute in Florida. They have no medical qualifications and are making false claims to vulnerable people, costing them their lives.

      RIP Little Angel

    2. How does the family know cause of death if they are not doctors?
No autopsy has been preformed (and probably won’t be for obvious reasons)

      1. Traditional thinking and modern science is right. Our people never needed the white man science nor medicine to tell our people what is good for us. When our creator calls one home its their time .. Our traditional mind and spirit tell us its OK we understand her time on earth is done she’s done her duty here, he story is an inspiration to many other sick children as well as adults and now our duty is to wrap our supportive arms around the family and community as one nation. Give them their privacy as they mourn her loss. They are incredibly strong and its Their faith our the creator that’s gotten them through, we may not be doctors but our doctor is the ruler of the heavens and we believe in his power and thank him for who we are in this modern world.

        1. Everyone knows Chemo is a grueling, unforgiving process but imagine what this little girl might have accomplished during her life for herself, her family and the nation if given the chance to live her remaining 70-80 years. I know that this seems like a ‘win’ for Aboriginal rights but at the cost of a little girl who could’ve went on to be amazing.

Chemo would’ve saved this girls life but if you think it’s better to think of her as a ‘symbol of aboriginal rights’, then creator help all of our sick children that are denied the untold investments and success in modern medicine.

I also think the owners of ‘Hippocratic Health Institute’ should have their passports barred from entry into Canada so they will stop preying on the sick and unfortunate in our communities. I know it is easy to say “well, everything might have went wrong but at least we followed our traditions’, since when is the new-age homeopathy in Florida regarded as ‘traditional native remedies’?
