In the Northwest Territories, the Dene Nation National Chief is taking offense to accusations made by Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver.

Oliver said radical environmentalists are trying to hijack the hearings into Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline and to undermine the country’s economic interests.

Oliver released an open letter this week claiming environmental and other radical groups want to block trade opportunities.

Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus says the government seems to be more interested in creating division rather than having a debate on environmental issues.

“It seems the federal government is trying to paint a picture here of good and bad. The bad guys are the radicals and the good guys are the federal government and industry,” said Erasmus. “It pits people against each other. The federal government should be brining people together. That should be the focus.”
