Nunavut lost a valuable part of its living history over the weekend as one of the territory’s most decorated elders passed away Saturday.

Nunavut lost a valuable part of its living history over the weekend as one of the territory’s most decorated elders passed away Saturday.

Annie Peterloosie died in hospital in Iqaluit after a long battle with stomach cancer.

She worked with Nunavut’s justice department in a number of roles, all designed to bring Inuit sensibilities to Nunavut’s court system.

She was also an advocate for maintaining the Inuit language and won the national Aboriginal Achievement Award for culture in 2010.
