Mi’kmaw community divided on how to distribute government money for land

APTN National News
A large settlement agreement in the Mi’kmaw community of Listuguj, Quebec is now at odds on how the money will be divided.

After years of negotiations, the community and Canada settled on a multi-million dollar deal.

The money was compensation for lost lands.

But as APTN’s Danielle Rochette reports, how they divide the cash is still being debated.

  1. Ron J.Meade says:

Listuguj is a nice community and have some friends and acquaintances whom live there. Much nicer homes than that of Eel River Reserve. If the monies are not divided among the people who live there perhaps these monies could be used to create work for these residents. Would also to see roads be repaired….many streets not paved and with gravel many pot holes exist and dangerous driving on such. Its my understanding that each member young and old are entitled to receive dispursements and would like to suggest that those whom are too young have some sort of account formed in their names until they reach a certain age which could be of use when they are older.

  2. No, they are not. There was a vote and it was decided to distribute the money evenly amongst band members.
