Mi’kmaq leaders concerned over shift in social assistance rates

Mi’kmaq leaders in Atlantic Canada are concerned over the impact changes to social assistance programs will have on communities.

Starting next year, Canada’s rates will mirror those used by the province.

But many say there are already big gaps in the standard of living.

And that change will only make things worse.

    Well coming from a meeting this past Monday and Tuesday, individuals stated, natives on reserves have not gotten a raise in living costs since they don’t know when. Single person lives on $148.00 every two weeks. Another grandmother said, singles were receiving 89.00 every two weeks.
