Iqaluit looks at ways to grow more food at home

Nearly 70 per cent of households in Nunavut experience food insecurity.

It’s a number that’s on its way up now that federal pandemic financial benefits have expired.

According to the Iqaluit food centre, more people than ever are lining up for free meals.

It said it is serving more than 450 meals a day instead of the fewer than 100 it was handing out during the pandemic.

A conference on the subject in Iqaluit this week looked at ways to grow or raise food at home instead of relying on costly shipments from the south that come by air.
