  1. Hart perley says:

Take control of your destiny before they do…..work together as nations not individual communities….everyone’s input is needed as should be….get ahead of them…..

  3. The First Nations right of self determination has been confirmed in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. International human rights law mandates the immediate dissolution of the racist Indian Act but the unilateral withdrawal of the status/wardship system would leave Ottawa open to allegations of racial genocide. What a tangled web! Why would Ottawa chose to set up another aboriginal list? National standards for aboriginal child welfare are urgently required but the primary authority to define First Nations peoples for Treaty rights must rest with First Nations.

  5. I wrote to Minister a few years outlining concerns related to adopted children who are given ‘blind Treaty Numbers’ and not connected to their Band until they request it when they turn 18 – and even then the time line to get the card was almost a year – connection is needed. In addition my son whose DNA says he is 30% native – will not have the opportunity to pass his Status on to his children unless he marries another Status Indian. He’s still passin on his Native genes but they won’t count???

  7. Slowly the government is taking steps to take away our Heath care and education now they are trying to meddle into band membership and registration soon there will be no education, health care or band membership which is the main identification used to qualify for health care and education benefits

  9. Please please please don’t let them paper genocide us! Did this ‘Study’ thing with the Tribes, They tried this same stunt in early 1990’s. created an Indian Registry administrator designation that each Tribe was supposed to have. Came with a week training and a 4” binder ( that I still have ). Paper genocide plain and simple. Start dividing people down by their blood quantum and soon we will be no more. Couldn’t get rid of us with contaminated blankets and herding is to reservations to be looked after by Boarding Schools, churches and Induan Agents. Look at all the hassles the US Tribes have! Our blood quantum’s shouldn’t define us. What should be important is community awareness, participation, acceptance. Let me ask this — would you rather have 100 Tribal members only there for the benefits of education and medical, who never come to Tribal Office, don’t bother to vote, even by absentee, don’t come to gatherings, ceremonies, don’t contribute to care of Elders and children OR 75 members who either live in the community or visit often to attend dances and honouring, pow wows, who volunteer, even if only at Christmas time, to help elders and children. Who raise their children to attend gatherings and learn the ways, who teach their sons to get up and help old ladies with chairs or bags. And teach their daughters to help in the kitchen and learn to take care of the food in the right way?? 75 or 100. In my humble opinion membership should be determined by the ability to prove ones lineage. Who are my parents, my grandparents, my Band, my Clan. WHY do I want membership? Will I attend functions and learn. Maybe all of this decided by Tribal Elders. Maybe a person needs to spend time with people, other relatives. Of course, unfortunately, safeguards would have to be in place to prevent people from being unfairly refused, but that is another issue. No matter what .. I think the federal government needs to stay out of how the Tribes/Bands decide their memberships. Ohhh and have a look at Bills-31 which definitely righted some wrongs and stopped women who wee NOT 1st Nations from marrying in and being awarded status. Interested to see how this all goes. Second time around.

  10. Here in Membertou, Nova Scotia, we have been been in discussions with our membership for a few years on member registration and other laws that will become our own. We will decide membership, land use, election process in the near future, matrimonial property law was already ratified.and passed as law. Indian Act is only a barrier to real progress

  11. What is it inac department has that holds our existing leaders over the barel, we members of our comunitys have had monies with held due to each man, woman, and child. Also to my understanding our budgets are restricted due to what ever it is you 2 partys are pointing back and forth, let me say as a member the Nations, all this is violation of our inherent rites, violation of the crown agrements, by both inac and leaders are scrambling about stuck im there own personal authority war due to breaches, violatuons, and maybe even treason. This in turn is having missunderstood dealings being done to obtaing Aboriginal governing appointed to inac or band leaders or federated leaders for the purpose of business and finacial advancements that at this point have no directive to the people also know and recognised as mambership and people of the land. I wish you all would be transparenent also appoint us an opposed party that would stand for the Nations membership. We need assiatance we remain in the shadows of mistakes and mismanagements. We also remain restricted and poverty for these practices inac and Aboriginal leaders follow. Why fight for energy sectors for its a govenment responsability to harvest, and return our lands to original state .. to pay anuitys and monies as agreed..it is not the people of the lands obligations or responsability to clean up after the extraction and to take the raigns of the pipeline needed to get that product across out land … maybe its time for proper Negotiatuons .. do not force our leaders with authority and power. Do not use the mistakes to obligate them to force us into surrender.. thats an act of violation. Why should a Nation pay for mistakes made by few… I demand Transparancy accountability, and proper band membership legal representation.

  12. Clarity is needed who the “other indigenous” are. Are we that compromised systematically? BC government has sought ways to make First Nations like provincial status and Trudeau saw this and he knew their language. Who sits as justice minister now at govt office a long side him? Sleepibg giants are still sleeping. Awake and see!

  16. Many of our nations have women as leaders, because they carry our traditions, stories, ceremonies, etc. Almost everything we owe to our women’s leadership. Men are just spokespersons of the clan or tribe.
However, the women are usually taught by the matriarch of their tribes/nations. They are not leaders just because they are women, their leadership is earned and passed down by people watching them us their knowledge.
Men’s roles include hunting, fishing, house building and supporting women as warriors.
Important issues are discussed at the clan level, then the tribal level, then the nation level.

  19. A non-native woman who married into treaty 4..has more treaty rights than I do.
She is also a band manager
All the same i still exit as a annishinabe ikwe..
Headman and woman don t support the annishinabe..
They all act mii tig oo shii.
    Indian affairs alwYs decided
Still trying to do us in…

    1. non native should not have the right to run as chief nor in
council they are not//.. native….. so why? some don.t care just
for money ?? bring in DNA. to prove your ancesteriol rights
their is no control of membership// where is the boarder line
      for metis ????

  20. Why do we repeatedly have another party forecast the future for us? What are CHIEF AND COUNCIL going to DO? Just sit there and NOD? Well let me tell you! I plan to run in the next election and I will be extremely forthright to counterattack any decision ever made again by another party! We are a soveriegn nation yet we havent exercised that right YET! When are we going to start? CNC?

  21. No Nation should have the right to determine who another Nations people are.
First Nations membership/citizenship should be determined by First Nations ourselves.
It’s like if the US started deciding who is, and who is not, Canadian. Only Canadians should decide the criteria for citizenship not a foreign nation or government right? Then why is it ok for Canada to decide who OUR citizens are?

    1. Good morning, the reality of our statures are based on the deal making between misconduct and obligations … i believe our people dont know the full truth and are being lead into surender of inherent rites for the mistakes blamed on the entire community rather the guilty few responsible. This seems like the path the Onion Lake band is stuck in…saying this and that and uncluding adaptive actions in our election law that indicates Citezenship of leadership.. i dont agree to surender my membership status for accountability and transparancy issues leaders have..I say ya got nothing to hide and want control.. than prove you credibility and comply.. than we take it to the next level.. review all aspcet in the table.

    2. NOW inclusion of the Metis status, cost more money and who will be blammed, First Nations of course.
