‘I held her as long as I could then I closed her eyes’: Sister recalls dark night on water and the family who saved her

Twenty years ago, Ashley Petite suffered through an accident that she will never forget.

She lost a family member during a boating accident.

“I held her for as long as I could and I closed her eyes and I kissed her and then … I let her go,” said Petite.

The boat Petite she and her family were travelling in capsized and all were thrown into the water.

After spending time in the chilly, choppy waters, a boat came along and hauled her out of the water – giving her a second chance at life.

Years later, Petite went looking for them – and found them.

“It was so surreal because without them I wouldn’t know what it would be like to be a mom,” said Petite.
