OTTAWA– Health Canada’s electronic system that processes medical and dental claims for First Nations and Inuit people is once again up and running.

A Health Canada official told APTN National News that the department had fixed the problem that caused the Non-Insured Health Benefits program’s electronic claims system to malfunction on Monday following an upgrade the day before.

A spokesman for Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said earlier in the day that the minister wanted to see the issue resolved as soon as possible.

“She understands that people depend on this program and that’s why it’s important that it gets dealt with as quickly as possible,” said Steve Outhouse.

Health Canada could not immediately provide details on what caused the system outage.

Pharmacies had been advised to continue providing medications to NIHB clients and submit the claims once the system is operational again.
