Federal government appoints directors to develop new council to advance reconciliation

Six people have been appointed to a new federal interim board aimed at advancing reconciliation.

Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild will chair the interim board of directors that will be tasked with developing the National Council for Reconciliation.

Littlechild is a former commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that recommended the council as part of its 94 recommendations or Calls to Action.

Max FineDay, Mike DeGagné, Clint Davis, Edith Cloutier, and Jean Teillet will also make up the board of directors.

The board members will spend the next six months talking to stakeholders to come up with recommendations to develop the council and the endowment of a National Reconciliation Trust.

“Reconciliation is not just an Indigenous issue, it’s a Canadian one, and it will take genuine collaboration at all levels to advance this journey,” said Carolyn Bennett, minister of Crown-Indigenous relations, in a statement.

Bennett also held a news conference in the foyer of the House of Commons to announce the board.

Littlechild said a lot has been done to promote reconciliation since the TRC released its report in 2015.

“However, there is no coordinating or monitoring mechanism,” he said in a statement. “I look forward with interest to the establishment of a council who will be influential in the increased engagement of the rest of Canada. True reconciliation requires all of us working together.”

  1. Look at someone who wants to they could just hire me I’m so tired of all these people talking about me and speaking for me like if you really want to get to the nitty-gritty of the stories what’s going on in people’s lives higher the people that are affected by the chaos ! now now I need someone to check out my Facebook under Wally Richard deerman. Send me a message and let’s get connected I can tell my story. I also have a degree and someone could hire me to do the research with my people then I’ve been denied most of my life. I’m sure that I could find and coordinate and facilitate healing circles. I’m now a pipe carrier in a Sundancer and have my best people’s interests at heart. Love all you guys and gals have a great day

  2. Aimed at upholding the status quo… why do we need this?? Women and children could use resources right now.

  7. I can’t say that I support this group because to me, they haven’t shown us anything, there is nothing to prove or show, but they get a pay cheque, Im a first nations man that has been through every bad sitiation in my homeland Canada, I’ve experienced prejudice and racism in our justice system, and I’ve learned alot, I’ve heard our so called politicians say things like john horgan said in the news, his comment that he stood in front of the media and said, I’m not the first one to stand in front of you and disappoint first nations and I won’t be the last, I take this comment as an example of the mentality in Canadian politician’s is low level with no respect, I know the dynamics of communications well enough that Canadians do listen and john horgan is a leader, these comments have a ripple effect that sounds through the business and working industry, its not good for reconciliation and i dont and won’t accept it as ok because its not ok, my hope is we can muzzle these politicians to comments like that, its a form of racism we as first nations have tolerated since the 1700’s and im this day and age, evolution must be part of the political and social discussions, I’m not asking for favors or telling you you have a job, i know the lot of you are very prosperous and doing very well in your life, I’m a struggling first nations man who is unable to provide for my family because someone out there thinks they know whats right for me, we experience prejudices from our own people as well and that is a breach of my canadian charter of rights and freedoms, and it connects to our human rights which is also violated here in my homeland Canada, I don’t wish this life my country provides to me on anyone.
