Experts recommend five safe injection sites in Toronto, Ottawa

APTN National News
A report from public health experts in Ontario calls for the creation of five safe injection sites in Ontario, similar to Insite in Vancouver.

The report was written by Drs. Ahmed Bayoumi and Carol Strike, and primarily funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Ontario HIV Treatment Network. It calls for three safe injection sites in Toronto and two in Ottawa, saying that the sites could prevent as many as 16 HIV infections and 95 hepatitis C infections combined.

The Ontario Ministry of Health says it plans to review the report before making any decision.

UPDATE: Ontario Minister of Health Deb Matthews has issued a statement saying that Ontario “has no plans to pursue supervised sites at this time”.
