Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister John Duncan responded in Edmonton Tuesday to criticism over cuts to Aboriginal organizations.

The massive cuts to Aboriginal political organizations have been on the minds of many First Nations across the country since they were dealt a blow to their core funding.

Ironically, Duncan met with the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce to discuss Aboriginal economic growth.

APTN National News reporter Noemi LoPinto reports on what the minister said.

  1. Roy Dahl says:

i have been saying this for 25 years now … eventually there will be a government that will say to native people: “that’s it … there will be no more $$$, no more land claims, no more reserves, no more treaties, no more apologies, no more rights … you will be like everyone else – a minority” … and i fear that day is coming sooner than we think …

  2. It’s amazing how the Harper Regime can flat out lie and get away with it. However if no one takes action and challenges the government in a public way, Harper will continue to win the PR war.

The only protection for Aboriginal peoples and surprisingly, Canada as a whole, is independent sovereignty for the First Peoples. The Canadian Government holds trillions of dollars of resource payments to aboriginal peoples in reserve and forces them to beg for money owed to them under treaty and unresolved treaty lands (and waters).

  3. because they have no ‘heart’ for Canada’s First Peoples, their ears and eyes are worthless; they see only what is in their hearts, and we ain’t there…. so, okay, who is gonna help me build an Ark… i believe it’s time for these foreigners to go back to where the CREATOR put them…

  4. My guess is Minister of Aboriginal Affairs is ignoring the reccent results of the national census done on aboriginal peoples in Canada. One question I was asked was, “Have aboriginal peoples contributed to Canada enough. My reply was that was a racist queston. And that I wanted to file a complain that it is a racist question.” I guess or land, resources and lives were not enough. And the loss of or culture identity. The fact is that continous funds are getting cut in regards to health, education and housing. These are our rights and promised to us to always be covered When is this country going to realize that we are rightfully due percentage without question from the resources that are taken from this country. It is Canada’s responsibility to continue to pay from these resources taken. How many non-native people recieve aboriginal money before it reaches first nations peoples. There is still a huge control of these monies by non-aboriginal peoples. Many of our conditions stem from still not having enough resources to access. Let alone the compensation that still needs to be done for the damage that has been done for the years of oppression. Canada needs to stop occuping First Nations people and just be responsible and hand over what is rightfully First Nations.

    1. I wonder how many Canadian immgrants realize that we’re in the driver’s seat and they are here as squatters??? Until such time that we first Nations establish our sovereinty we should all remember that the earth belongs to the Creator and that we were placed in various locations for a reason….Scares me all to heck when I see a deadbeat like Duncan in charge of Aborigial Affairs and Harper directing him….Wake me….I’m having nightmares……

  5. I’m not surprised any more as the Government has a history of cuts towards our Beloved 1st Nations Brothers & Sisters…their history is as black as coal especially the Residential Schools we were put in, stealing our land and forcing us to live on Reservations. It’s our children & their children who will & feel the cuts towards education. 🙁

  6. I’m sure this was in the works since the bulk of the aboriginal community are against the northern gateway pipeline (and rightfully so). Harper will stop at nothing to bring any opposition to its knees…what a scumbag!

  7. As far as I’m concerned, the cuts were made from money that belongs to the original inhabitants of Turtle Island…First Nations! The fact that many are stepping up to express their opinion on inequalities and injustices has prompted the gov’t to penalize the organizations they thought they had control over.
