OTTAWA—Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose says her party will now support the Liberal government’s plan to hold a public inquiry into the high number of murdered and missing Indigenous women.

Ambrose said during an interview with CBC News Friday that the Liberal government will have her full support on the planned inquiry.

“I have always said we need action and not more reports. If the Liberal government wants to do an inquiry and they think it’s an important thing to do, I will support it,” said Ambrose.

The move is a complete reversal of the position the Conservative’s took while in power. Former prime minister Stephen Harper was strongly opposed to holding an inquiry. Ambrose, who held the Status of Women portfolio at one point in the Harper government, always publicly supported her former leader’s position.

Now, she’s had a change of heart.

Ambrose telegraphed the shift Friday morning when she tweeted a photograph of a chance encounter with Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould.

“Looking forward 2 working tgther 2 end violence against women, a passion of mine for years (sic),” tweeted Ambrose, along with a smiling photograph of her posing with Wilson-Raybould.

A spokesperson for Wilson-Raybould said the minister met Ambrose by chance in CTV’s Ottawa studio.

“There has been on formal meeting between the minister and Ms. Ambrose,” said the spokesperson.

APTN National News contacted Ambrose’s office shortly after the tweet seeking comment, but received no response.

  1. Rona Ambrose is not interested in safety and freedom/rights of all women. She has personal views about abortion , seeking to change and reduce access in Canada. She is from the conservative side of the fence. This smells like a publicity stunt to me.
