As the world’s eyes remain on the conflict in Ukraine, we are reminded of the connections communities share with Ukrainian settlers who came to this land.

APTN News has done a number of stories on the shared love of kookum scarves – those colourful floral headscarves that were given as gifts to our ancestors from early Ukrainian settlers.

We’ve got another angle that might be news to you — in 2018, the Shumka Ukrainian dancers in Edmonton and Running Thunder powwow dancers teamed up to produce an incredible performance called Ancestors and Elders.

Two of the people involved in that production talk about the friendships formed and how that impacts them now.

And we talk to former gang members who penned a new book Indigenous Women and Street gangs: A Survivance Narrative.
