Catholic bishop responds to Deninu K’ue battle over future of culture camp

A small First Nation built one of the leading culture camps in the Northwest Territories.

And the local Roman Catholic diocese wants to shut it down as APTN reported Monday.

Now, the diocese says their concerns are over safety.

    The Catholic Church is concerned about the liability on the land, although this has been going on for over fifteen years. When they took possession of the land; whose land was it in the first place? Native Nations have land rights that is not respected by the Catholic Church, although, the Federal Government acknowledges the land rights of First Nation peoples. It would be helpful for First Nation Peoples if this camp was duplicated throughout Indian country.
