AFN national chief race shaping up

Nominations for candidates seeking to run for national chief of the Assembly of First Nation are now open.

Nominations for candidates seeking to run for national chief of the Assembly of First Nation are now open.

Nominations close at midnight Eastern Standard Time on June 12.

Some possible candidates have already shown interest alongside Shawn Atleo, the current national chief.

Lawyer and Ryerson professor Pam Palmater has expressed that she may run for national chief.

So has former outspoken Roseau River chief Terry Nelson.

AFN regional chief Bill Erasmus is also expected to take a run along with Manitoba lawyer Joan Jack who has expressed an interest in the election set for July 18.

Each candidate needs the endorsement of at least 15 chiefs representing First Nations members of the AFN.

All candidates also face a spending limit of $35,000.
