While lights flashed and music boomed during the Arctic Winter Games opening ceremonies Sunday, athletes were already busy competing in events.

And it’s fitting that the first event was hockey.

In the first Bantam male game, team NWT beat team Yukon 7-4.

The girls also took to the rink. In the Junior female category, team Northwest Territories and team Yukon ended in a 2-2 tie.

On the indoor soccer pitch, in the Juvenile division, team Greenland took a 10-4 victory over team Alaska.
