Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer says First Nations chiefs will have to wait until his platform is released to see how he differs from former prime minister Stephen Harper.
Hundreds of chiefs in Ottawa for the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly booed him in response.
During a question-and-answer session with the opposition leader, chiefs asked Scheer how he plans to rebuild trust with Indigenous people in Canada, saying Harper lost that trust.
Scheer, responding to two similar questions, says he’s going to have to ask for a little bit of patience, until the Conservatives have a 2019 election platform ready.
Scheer says there will be clear ways that his approach will be different.
He says in the last election the Conservatives did not gain support from a large majority of First Nations communities and people and he wants to fix that.

It would seem the Conservative party have no real policy regarding First Nations and rely instead on cobbled together last minute election platforms. Scheer says in the last election the Conservatives did not gain support from a large majority of First Nations communities and people and he wants to fix that. Instead of trying to gain their support to win an election how about supporting the First Nations so they can win at life! If you support them it would only seem to follow that they would in turn support you. Scheer could have started by holding the current government accountable for failing to ensure adequate drinking water for all communities, part of the Liberals last winning “election platform”. How about ensuring all Canadians have at least equal amounts of funding for education. Scheer asks for a little bit of patience. First Nations people have been “patient” for hundreds of years.
He knows that supporting first Nations will cost him support from his core constituency. Probably more than he could gain back from first Nation votes. His base will abandon him if he appears to soften the positions that Stephen Harper entrenched.

In Scheers home riding, he did not go out of his way at all to get the “aboriginal vote”. He depended on the hard core mainstream population and as such got the retirees out to vote. Will be some hard planning going on in his writer’s residence, a whole lot of new fashioned catch phrases describing the old bench ways!
Wendy D! Please, please! I am a retiree and the only way I would step out the door for a conservative would be to vote for anyone but a Con, or to publicly confront a Con, demanding clear explication of his or her so-called platform.
