Metis Nation of Ontario put on year probation, ordered to rescind communities, review membership

The Metis National Council (MNC) has adopted a resolution to put the Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO) on a one year probation following the organization grandfathering in non Metis citizens and six Metis communities where the Metis National Council only recognizes one.

“So we’re at the stage it’s up to the Metis Nation leadership in Ontario to comply if they can meet the conditions then there’s no issue,” said MNC President Clement Chartier.

“If they can’t it’s not an issue for us.”

Some of the resolutions include, a committee of the MNC board of governors is going to be established to organize a registry review of all MNO members, and the MNO rescind its declaration of the six new historic Metis communities.

The MNO has one year to adopt the re-admission resolutions.

MNO President Margaret Froh said she doesn’t see a problem with meeting these requirements, but she isn’t happy about it.

“I think in particular when making this kind of decision I would prefer our assembly had all the information and had the time to be able to really consider properly,” she said. “That being said the will of the assembly has been essentially the Metis nation of Ontario was being provided with a year to provide some clarity around some of the points they’ve raised.”

The MNC said if the MNO doesn’t meet the deadlines and requirements, it will be suspended.

  1. Jason says:

I’ve been saying it for the better part of 20 years, !@#% the MNC! I seriously hope the MNO doesn’t give in to their bullying. Ontario’s historic Metis communities are legit, and recognized by the Supreme Court of Canada.

  2. All this fighting amongst ourselves is disgraceful! Im 23 years old, born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie. I came out of hiding 5 years ago and with all this hate it makes me want to just go back to the way my life was before i found my place within the Métis Nation. There is enough hate in this world and we all should be working together to achieve our goals and rights as a strong nation! Unfortunately I’m sure this will attract hate just like everything else these days but I will always hold my head high because i know where my pride belongs.

  7. Here’s some questions that need answers. If the Michif speaking people in Western Canada were to create a Michif Nation to protect their unique way of Life. Why would any Government recognize them as distinct?
Also do the Eastern Half-breeds have any unique culture that dates back to the 1800’s?

  9. They are not even recognizing the Sault St.Marie community; home of the Powley case. Ontario Metis won their rights and now they are tossing us out. MNO should do what NWT MN did and leave.

Just like what they did with Jim Sinclair, used them and tossed him away when done with their use of him and the funding from memberships .. 🙁 .. WOW .. remember people McCargar case from MNA says you do not need to be in any association to be Metis, walk away from all that corruption and start your own organization with the founding members who put their lives work into it !!

  13. Metis Central is the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, pure and simple. Can someone in Nova Scotia show me an historical document of someone in NS wearing a sash? And where did they hunt buffalo in NS?

    1. You fo not need to hunt buffalo to be Métis I mean really? Give your head a shake and the sash was worn in the east WAY before it was worn in the west

    2. They didn’t hunt buffalo. They fished, farmed and hunted local game. And Métis of Nova Scotia are treaty people, having signed the Friendship Treaty of 1725. They have been an oppressed people following “Le Grand Dérangement” when they were rounded up with Acadiens, loaded onto boats and deported from their lands to clear the way for British landowners. When those who survived returned, they hid their identity for fear of reprisals. Now, they are coming forward and claimed Ming their identity in the spirit of reconciliation. Who are you to say they do not exist? BTW, I am not Métis nor am I an Indigenous person, nor do I live in Nova Scotia. I just happen to think that this divisiveness and fearmongering has a quite mean spirited and honestly quite sad. The way they are being treated is not unlique the way Trump treats immigrants.

  15. Horribly dishonest to provide non Métis with status. It’s a dark shadow over the organization that obviously can’t be trusted.

  16. Metis spread out across Canada from the East coast. The new Metis homeland map is a hate crime against me and members of my extended family. Founding member of the MNO Midland Ontario.

    1. I come from penetang and always said I was metis 5 generations this MNC I just herd of they are suppose to recognize all metis in Canada this is ridiculous what kind of metis would not recognize his fellow people is he on a power trip when does this organization represent all metis in Canada I never voted and hope our organization MNO stands up to this so called MNC our president has to tell him he does not represent east Canada or any of us in Canada we are proud METIS and will not let this MNC speak for me .This means stand up and speak eastern Canada .Ken Perrault

      1. Your right you don’t have to stay in MNC. But if you chose to then there are rules that you have been ignoring and that has to change.

    2. Metis did not spread from the East Coast! The French,English, Irish, and Scottish did. The term Metis is French that means Mixed Blood. Fact the Metis Nation started in Manitoba in 1816. Anything before was only referring to half-breed, Brule, and other terms that the Europeans verbally called them, while the French called them Metis. In all actuality they probably should have called themselves The Michif Speaking people. As countries and Nations have their own Language and culture unique to themselves. Check the U.N website for what qualifies a group as a Nation.

  17. How much power does the MNC hold over Metis Nation of Ontario and why do we need to care?
